MusiCares, the charity founded by the Grammy organization, has named U2 — Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. — its 2027 MusiCares Persons of the Year. The 36th annual benefit gala will be held on Friday, Feb. 5, 2027, at a new venue, Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, two nights before the 69th Grammy Awards on Feb. 7.

Five decades of music and service

U2 formed after meeting at their Dublin high school in 1976 and has won 22 Grammys. The honor recognizes both the band's body of work and decades of support for causes including human rights, global health, disaster relief, recovery and music education. MusiCares honored Bono individually as Person of the Year in 2003; this time all four members are honored together.

In their statement, the band credited the people they have worked with over 50 years of recording and touring — from producers and engineers to carpenters and riggers.

Tribute concert seats open to more fans

The evening includes a cocktail reception, dinner and a tribute concert of U2's music. For the first time, MusiCares is opening the tribute concert to a broader audience, with individual theater seats and gala dinner tables on sale through its official site. Proceeds support MusiCares programs for music people, including mental health, addiction recovery, disaster relief and financial assistance.

Three big nights of Grammy Week

Grammy Week 2027 brings MusiCares Persons of the Year on Feb. 5, the Pre-Grammy Gala on Feb. 6 and the 69th Grammy Awards on Feb. 7. Nominations will be announced on Nov. 16, and GAJ will publish a category-by-category roundup on the day.

Editor's view

The Grammy organization does more than hand out awards. Within the same group is MusiCares, a safety net for people who make a living in music — and this year a band celebrating 50 years takes center stage to raise funds for it. When U2 named the people behind their career, they pointed not only to those on stage but to those who record, build and carry the show.
